ROAD PARK

With their Growing Green Spaces grant (2018-19), The Conservation Volunteers (TCV) have added colour and life to the park by building a dedicated Thursday volunteering group who tend the rose beds and raised beds. To date, they've planted over 1,000 bulbs, tidied up the rockery, and transformed the park’s food-growing area, making it fully accessible to wheelchair users and flourishing with edible produce that Choose2Youth use in Hull Road Park Café. Support from GGS will allow them to grow and sustain this important work.

FIshponds wood

Fishponds Wood is a designated nature reserve and urban haven for wildlife. The Friends of Fishponds Wood and Beech Grove are committed to increasing and maintaining the biodiversity of this precious woodland and the green areas in the nearby Beech Grove. They carry out monthly action days, involving tree work, litter picking, and flower planting, and have also arranged bat walks and minibeast safaris. Recently, they collaborated with York High School to build nesting boxes for bats, and are developing a school visit programme with Carr Primary School.

HOLGATE COMMUNITY GARDEN

Over the past three years, the Holgate Community Garden volunteers have transformed a derelict park at Upper St Paul’s into a thriving, vibrant space in an area where most residents don’t have gardens. It is now flourishing with flowers, fruit trees, and wildflower areas to benefit wildlife and increase biodiversity. The group run family-friendly gardening events and collaborate with St Paul’s Primary School to engage locals and children in seed planting and tending this beautiful garden.

MILLENNIUM FIELDS

St Nicks are securing the future of Millennium Fields as a valuable habitat and resource for the local community to enjoy by keeping these important grasslands buzzing with biodiversity and wildlife. St Nicks will connect and train the cluster of volunteer groups working in the area to aid collaborative working among the Friends of Danesmead Wood, Millennium Fields Meadow Group, Fulford Cross Allotment Association, YUMI, Friends of New Walk, Danesmead Orchard Residents Group, and the St Nicks-Blueberry Academy partnership.

lane, HEWORTH

Dodsworth Residents’ Association (DARA) are giving a neglected piece of land at the end of a junction between Pottery Lane and Dodsworth Avenue a green makeover. In connection with Edible York, they have planted fruit trees and bushes, and plan to enhance the space further by adding a raised bed and fans of foliage against the garage wall. Volunteers who live nearby water the plants, and the neighbourhood is already enjoying the benefits of this now attractive green space.

REDFEARN

Redfearn Community Group are dedicated to greening the alleys and streets around Willis Street, Gordon Street, Wolsley Street, Wellington Street. They are adding beauty and biodiversity to the neighbourhood with their planting parties, and also arrange regular meet-ups, plant swaps, and ‘backyard crawls’!

YUMI

As a recognised City of Sanctuary, York welcomes refugees and asylum seekers. The York Unifying Multicultural Initiative's (YUMI) International Community Garden is a beautiful, tranquil place where people from different cultures come together to grow, cook, share and celebrate food from around the world. Volunteers tend the community allotment to grow produce, including plants from their native country, integrating with the local community and fostering friendships while learning new skills.

ROWNTREE PARK

The Friends of Rowntree Park’s team of volunteers help keep one of York’s best-loved green spaces looking beautiful. As well as gardening and goose management, they organise family activities in the park and are developing a Forest School programme with Knavesmire Primary School. With funding from Growing Green Spaces in 2018 and 2019, the Friends have brightened up the herbaceous borders and shrubbery and, with help from York Mind, are planting a sensory garden that will bring health and wellbeing benefits to park visitors. In partnership with York Bike Belles and the artist Thomas Frere, they created the grass labyrinth that is now a permanent feature of the park, which was launched during the 2019 Walk Cycle Festival.

CLARENCE

GARDENS

Thanks to The Conservation Volunteers (TCV), the park is now a more attractive place for wildlife and people. TCV also collaborated with local residents and York LGBT Forum to create York’s first Human Rights Garden, which offers takeaway vegetable boxes filled with rainbow chard, curly kale, and herbs.

GLEN GARDENS

Therapeutic Art and Play Therapy Yorkshire (TAPTY) organised a summer gardening and creative project aimed at families and children that involved a lot of sensory, messy, and creative play for children. Each Saturday, families visited the gardens and were provided with gardening tools, art materials, and toys. Activities included the planting of a herb garden, the braiding of a willow dome, and a hugely successful den-building competition!
